Though the president of India holds a higher position than that of the Prime Minister of India, the fact remains that the Prime Minister of India is practically the most powerful person in the country. According to the formality, the Prime Minister is appointed by the President. It is the President who invites the him or her who has been elected to be the leader of the parliamentary party. The person's being elected demands absolute majority of support in the the Lok Sabha.

The political history of India has so far had a number of Prime Ministers for itself. Till the present day the persons who have been Prime Ministers of India, are Shri Jawaharlal Nehru, Lal Bahadur Shastri, Shrimati Indira Gandhi,Shri Manoj Desai, Shri Charan Sing, Rajiv Gandhi, Vishwanath Pratap Sing, Shri Chandra Shekhar, Shri V. P. Narasimha Rao, Shri H. D. Deve Gowda, Shri Inder Kumar Gujral, Sri Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Dr. Manmohan Singh. Jawaharlal Nehru became the Prime Minister of India for four successive terms from the year of 1947 till the year of 1964. Indira Gandhi served as the Prime Minister of India for three terms from the year of 1966 to the year of 1977 and from the year of 1980 to the year of 1984. Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee served as the Prime Minister of India on three different occasions. In two transitional periods, Gulzar Lal Nanda served as the Prime Minister of India. He was, of course, an Acting Prime Minister.
Dr. Manmohan Singh happens to the present Prime Minister of India. Among the Prime Ministers of India Dr. Manmohan Singh is the first one to be the Seihk Prime Minister of India. He became the Prime Minister of India on 22nd May in the year of 2004. This highly qualified person happens to be the most educated person among the Prime Ministers of India in the history of India. Manmohan is one of the members of the Indian National Congress party. In the year of 1991 Manmohan Singh became the Finance Minister of India. He proved to be a very efficient person in the job he was doing. During that time Narasimha Rao was the Prime Minister of India.
The foremost of all the Prime Ministers of India is Jawaharlal Nehru. Initially he was a political leader of the National congress party of India. He also took part in the freedom movement of India. For the scholarly knowledge that he had, Nehru was popular as Punditji. He was also a classy writer with immense profundity of expression and knowledge. He also became the president of All India Unions Congress. Nehru was initiated as the prime minister of India on the day on which India achieved Independence, on 15th August in the year of 1947. The title of his inaugural address to the nation is still widely referred to in many cases. The title was 'A tryst with Destiny'.
