The Marathas in the History of India |

Marathas are the Indo Aryan groups and are from the state of Maharashtra. They are the Hindu warriors and are forms large population in Maharashtra. Marathas are known for their bravery as they played an important role in the Indian independence. To know about the Marathas in the history of India one need to know various aspects of their community. The Marathas are known by their name because of their language known as Marathi. During the medieval period many Martha rulers ruled many parts of the country.

Some of the Maratha rulers like Yadhava-Jadhavs and Satavahana and Rashtrakuta did many things for India. All these rulers were united to work under the leadership of Chhatrapati Shivagi. Important role has been played by the Marathas in the history of India. They helped to remove the Muslim dominance in India. As Marathas are known for their vigor and bravery their rise to power helped demolishing the Muslim rule in India.
Some of the Marathas chiefs were working under the Bijapur sultan. During this time the the Bijapur sultans were doninated by Mughals. The 'father of Maratha nations' is said to be Shivaji Bosle. He is founder of Maratha nation. Born in 1627 he played an important role in demoloshing Mughal rule by caturing two forts in Pune. His power on Pune influenced him to capture other parts of the Maharashtra. He then captured forts in the region of Torna, Purandar and Rajgad. His power was recognized when he killed the popular Adilshahi general Afzal Khan which eventually dmolralized the army of the general. This killing became an advantage for him and gradually he laid the foundations of the famous Maratha nation. He used many tactics to make his army strong and to fight against the mughals. The guerilla tactics helped him to make his army strong. His army succeeded many attacks. He won many war against Mughals during 1660s. But his success didn't last long, he was defeated in by Aurangzeb's General Jai Singh. This defeat led to his arrest in 1666. But the same year he escaped his arrest and regained his Maratha capital. He controlled most of the parts of western part of Maharashtra by 1673. he bravery and glory was spreading every where and eventually he got a name “Chhatrapati”. By 1680 he captured almost all parts of deccan.
He died in 1680 and his son Sambhaji succeeded his legacy. But his legacy couldn't last long and was arrested by Aurangzeb in 1689 and was executed in the same year. But this was not the defeat o0f Marathas as the second son of Shivaji, Rajaram took over the kingdom. But he died in 1700 and his ten year old son Shahu took the charge of the kingdom. At the mere age of ten he was too young to rule a kingdom. But he along with his army continued the fight against Aurangazeb. However the fight against the Mughals came to an end when Aurangazeb died in 1707. This helped the Marathas to took over all the kingdoms. Thus, it is clear that how the Marathas in the history of India played an important role.
