Important Events in Indian History

The history of India presents a rare diversity and variety. The history of India begins with the Indus Valley Civilization. This civilization spread in the north-western part of the subcontinent from 3300 to 1700 B.C. This is regarded as the one of the Important Events in Indian History. Not only in Indian history, this is an important event in the history of the world. The Indus Valley civilization is followed by Vedic Age. This is the time when India saw the rise of major kingdoms. Of these the sixteen mahajanapadas is most important. In the 6th century, Buddha and Mahavira was born.

The birth of these two personalities can be considered as another Important Events in Indian History as they revolutionized the thoughts, philosophy and thinking of the people of this subcontinent. The subcontinent was unified in the 3rd and 4th century under the Maurya rule. But subsequently, it again distintegrated into numerous small kingdoms for the next ten cnturies.

With the rise of the Gupta dynasty there evolved some of the most powerful Gupta rulers. India was again united under these Gupta rulers. The advent of Islam in the 8th century is another Important Events in Indian History. With the acquisition of Baluchistan and Sindh by Muhammas bin Qasim, Islam arrives in India. Islam spread across the Indian subcontinent for over a period of 500 years. Turks and Afghans invaded India in the 10th and 11th centuries and established the sultanates in Delhi.In the early 16th century, descendants of Chengis Khan embroiled across the Khyber Pass and established the Mughal Dynasty in India. This dynasty lasted for about 200 years. The southern India was dominated by Hindu Chola and Vijayanagar dynasties from the 11th to the 15th centuries. This is another remarkable period in Indian history when the two systems, the Hindu and Muslim-mingled, leaving behind a lasting cultural influences on each other.

In 1619 the first British outpost was established in South Asia at Surat on the northwestern coast. Later in the century, the British East India Company started permanent trading stations at Madras, and Calcutta and Bombay, each under the protection of native rulers.
